250 awnings protect worshippers at Prophet’s Mosque from hot sun

The Presidency for the Affairs of the Prophet’s Mosque is continuing its efforts to cover the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque with awning for the comfort of worshippers, Al-Watan daily reported.

Fans erected on the pillars are playing an important role in reducing temperatures by spraying water mist at different parts of the courtyards.

Director of Public Relations at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Prophet’s Mosque Abdulwahid Al-Hattab said the awnings project was carried out within the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

Over 250 awnings have been fitted on pillars in the mosque's courtyards, he said. They cover an area of 143,000 square meters of the courtyards, providing shelter to over 200,000 worshippers.

Up to 800 worshippers can pray under each awning, which covers an area of 576 square meters.

Al-Hattab said these canopies have given the courtyards an aesthetic appeal. “They have added to the atmosphere of spirituality and tranquility. This has enabled the visitors and worshippers to visit the Prophet’s Mosque during the day without enduring the scorching summer temperatures or fears of sunstroke, especially while performing Friday prayer,” he said.

Al-Hattab said the awnings were manufactured specifically for the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque using the latest technology and with the highest quality materials by highly skilled technicians.

He said they are equipped with floodwater drainage and lighting systems. They open automatically when needed.
